WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the passing of former Congressman Jim Oberstar:
“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my friend and former Congressman Jim Oberstar this morning. For 36 years, Jim served the people of Minnesota’s 8th Congressional district with honor and distinction. As the Chairman and Ranking Member on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, he worked across the aisle to address our country’s most pressing challenges. Jim was unparalleled in his knowledge and understanding of the transportation and infrastructure world. He was a visionary who fought for green transportation to create more jobs and opportunity for our people in new industries, and to improve our national security through energy independence. He also worked tirelessly for transportation safety measures that have saved hundreds of thousands of lives, for America’s drivers, airline passengers, and schoolchildren.
"Our nation has lost an extraordinary public servant and a man of integrity, committed to civility and bipartisanship and he will be greatly missed. I join in mourning his passing, and my thoughts and prayers are with his wife Jean, his children, family and friends at this most difficult time.”
