WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the passing of LGBT advocate Edith Windsor:

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Edith Windsor, who spent the past four decades fighting for equality for LGBT Americans.  The case she brought to the Supreme Court after the death of her wife Thea led to the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act being overturned, a landmark moment that helped set the stage for the eventual nation-wide legalization of same-sex marriage.

“Today, thanks in large part to the heroic and tireless work of advocates like Edie, LGBT Americans can have their loving partnerships and their families treated with equal dignity under the laws of our country.  I will continue to be inspired by Edie as I work with my colleagues in Congress to carry forward the fight for full equality in education, housing, military service, and every aspect of American life in which it is still denied.  I join in extending my condolences to her wife Judith and Edie’s entire family.”
