WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the passing of Ed Lorenzen, his friend and former Senior Policy Adviser:

“I was heartbroken to hear that Ed and his young son Michael were killed in a house fire on Friday. Ed was a devoted servant to his country, a wonderful father to his children, and a great friend to me. Many of his former colleagues in my office and across Congress in both parties will remember Ed for his kindness, his intellect, and his love for the institution he served so ably, both in my office and, before that, with Rep. Charlie Stenholm. He joined my staff in 2007, serving until 2010, and was instrumental to the successful efforts by Democrats in the Majority during that period to promote budget sustainability.

“Ed brought a rare passion to fiscal responsibility. He helped author the Statutory PAYGO Act that earned him the nickname he later embraced as his Twitter handle, “Captain PAYGO,” before working alongside Erskine Bowles and Senator Al Simpson on the President’s Fiscal Commission. Ed shared that same passion for his Chicago Cubs, which he proudly promoted in my office on his ties. He was a resource not only to me but to staff and Members on both sides of the aisle throughout his time on Capitol Hill.

“The loss of his young son Michael in the same tragic house fire compounds this tragedy for all of us who have been close to Ed and his family. My prayers now are with his son Zacheri and daughter Penny, who survived in part due to Zacheri’s heroic actions, and with their entire extended family.”
