WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the passing of the former Librarian of Congress, Dr. James Billington:

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. James Billington. He presided over the Library of Congress during a time of profound technological change, overseeing the process of making the Library's extraordinary collections more accessible to their owners: the American people. I was honored to know Dr. Billington and see firsthand his dedication to the institution as well as to its mission of ensuring that our nation’s lawmakers are informed and have ready access to the latest scholarship on every issue. His passing is a great loss to the Library, to the Congress it serves, and to our country. I join in offering my condolences to his wife Marjorie, their children, and their grandchildren - as well as all the outstanding public servants who worked with him at the Library of Congress and the Woodrow Wilson International Center.”
