WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the House passed H.Con.Res. 90, which condemns the ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya and calls for an end to the attacks in and an immediate restoration of humanitarian access to the state of Rakhine in Burma:

“Today, I joined with Members on both sides of the aisle to pass a resolution condemning Burma’s campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Rohingya people and calling for Burma’s government to allow Rohingya refugees to return to their homes.  Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya civilians have been displaced, many murdered in cold blood, others subjected to sexual violence and brutal maiming.  This slaughter must end, and our resolution ought to send a strong message to Burmese leaders that their commitment to restoring democracy will be judged by their respect for the individual rights and freedoms of all people living within Burma’s borders, no matter their faith or ethnicity.
“I also hope the Administration swiftly imposes sanctions on the military leaders responsible for these crimes.  I thank Caucus Chairman Crowley and Ranking Member Engel for their leadership in helping to bring this bipartisan resolution to the Floor and securing support for its passage.”
