WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the House passed the Improper Payments Elimination and Recovery Act:
“Today the House took another step to increase fiscal responsibility by passing legislation to reduce wasteful government spending and save taxpayer money.  Just last year, it’s estimated that $98 billion was wasted by government agencies making improper payments – paying the wrong amount, the wrong person, or at the wrong time.  The bill we passed today will help reduce waste, fraud, and abuse by identifying and eliminating improper payments, helping to recover funds that were spent improperly, and increasing transparency in government spending.  I want to thank Rep. Patrick Murphy for offering this legislation which will give the Administration additional tools to eliminate improper payments, and the Obama Administration for their focus on this issue.  Passage of this legislation builds on Democrats’ efforts to crack down on wasteful spending, and I hope the Senate moves quickly so we can send it to the President for his signature.”
