WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for October:

"In the last jobs report before the midterm election, Americans can see the fundamental challenges facing our economy.  As we reach ninety-seven consecutive months of job growth, it is clear the economy is strong on many fronts.  However, as wage growth slowed to its lowest level since February, it’s also clear those jobs aren't always paying the higher wages our workers deserve.  Families and businesses continue to struggle through an environment of economic uncertainty despite tax breaks showered on corporate boardrooms.

"House Democrats are ready to tackle these challenges head on.  Through our Make It In America plan and our For the People agenda, we are ready with broadly supported proposals to address key problems that are holding us back from broadly shared growth.  If entrusted with the Majority, our focus will be on advancing legislation to bring families and small businesses greater economic security, to raise wages and make health care more affordable, to invest in education and skills training so our graduates and workers can adapt to new economic opportunities, to upgrade our infrastructure, and to promote civility and consensus-building in Washington aimed at achieving results.

"It isn't enough to look at how many jobs our economy creates.  What matters is what those jobs bring to our people.  Will our workers struggle to get by and support their families on two - or sometimes three - jobs?  Or will we build an economy that works for our people once more, where a solid career opens doors to a more secure future for our workers and their children to get ahead?  That's what House Democrats are ready to achieve for the American people."
