WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the summit in Singapore between President Trump and North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un:

“While diplomacy with our adversaries is fundamental to a smart approach in foreign affairs, it must be carried out wisely and in concert with our allies.  The Administration went into this process with a goal of complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization.  It achieved none of those goals.  Instead, it appears that this summit was little more than a reality television photo-opportunity.  The price of this piece of political theater was America giving the North Koreans what they sought without receiving anything real in return.  Meanwhile, our South Korean allies were left out of the room and are now in greater danger because of the Trump Administration’s decision to give in to the Kim regime on ending joint military exercises.

“That the joint statement issued by the two parties failed even to mention human rights is further demonstration of this President’s abandonment of American values in his approach to the world.  Congress now has to set clear expectations on what any deal with North Korea must include – before we lose our leverage.  Any agreement with North Korea must be based not on blind faith but on verifiable steps toward denuclearization and addressing human rights.”
