WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Barack Obama nominated former Director of the Office of Personnel Management, John Berry, to be the next United States Ambassador to Australia:

“I am pleased that President Obama has nominated my good friend John Berry to be the next United States Ambassador to Australia. Our relationship with Australia is one of our most critical bilateral alliances, and I am confident that John will not just continue, but strengthen, our positive relationship.

“John has brought effective management and leadership skills to every role in which he has served. At OPM, he was a champion for federal employees and worked to build a more diverse federal workforce by emphasizing the importance of hiring more veterans, Hispanics, and people with disabilities. While on my staff, he made a difference for many Americans as a principal architect of the Federal Employee Pay Comparability Act.

“Throughout the years I have known John, he has consistently served his country with dignity, integrity, and extraordinary ability. I know that he will be an exceptional representative of the United States as our next Ambassador to Australia and I look forward to the Senate’s swift consideration of his nomination so that he can begin his important work representing the United States.”
