WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Medicare and Social Security Trustees Report was issued this afternoon:
“Today’s report shows that the challenges confronting Medicare and Social Security are continuing to grow. Only by addressing them will we be able to reduce our deficits and debt and put our nation back on a fiscally sustainable path. The problems facing Medicare are both serious and near-term, with the Trust Fund expected to be insolvent in just eight years. Congress is already working to address this through our efforts on health care reform legislation. By passing legislation that controls health care costs, we will go a long way toward restoring the Medicare program.
“I am pleased that Secretary Geithner stated the Administration’s support for moving forward with Social Security reform after health care reform has passed. With Presidential leadership and bipartisan support, we have the opportunity to reach a broad consensus on how to strengthen Social Security. It is important that we have a constructive, positive dialogue about the options for reform, and I look forward to working with the President as we move forward.”
