WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on reports that the Puerto Rican government has acknowledged a revised death toll of 1,427 people:

“The revised official death toll from Hurricanes Irma and Maria in Puerto Rico is tragic and alarming. As much as the Trump Administration wishes to obscure the extent of this disaster and its deeply flawed response, the human impact of these storms has been devastating. This death toll attests to the profound loss experienced by thousands of families and communities across the island and on the mainland. These 1,427 victims were American citizens, and our government owes it to them and their families to help Puerto Rico recover and rebuild as well as ensure we are better prepared for future storms. I will continue working closely with Rep. Nydia Velazquez and other advocates for Puerto Rico in Congress to ensure that the commonwealth, along with the U.S. Virgin Islands and affected parts of the mainland, have all the resources needed to rebuild stronger.”
