WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for July:
“Our economy continues to show its resilience, even in the face of the uncertainty exacerbated by gridlock in the Republican-led Congress. With 198,000 private sector jobs created last month, more Americans are heading back to work in an economy that grew at a 4% rate last quarter. However, millions are still searching for jobs.
“House Democrats are continuing to push for legislation to help Americans find the jobs they seek and to and prevent them from slipping into poverty while in the process. That’s why we’ve introduced bills under the Make It In America plan to invest in growing our manufacturing sector and creating high-skill, high-wage jobs that won’t be shipped overseas. It’s why we’ve called for a restoration of emergency unemployment insurance for the 3 million Americans who were cut off and why we have worked across the aisle with Republicans to reauthorize workforce training programs and expand federal support for innovation.
“There is much Congress can and must do, and House Democrats will continue to advocate for bipartisan measures to boost private sector hiring. I call on Republicans to set their partisan agenda aside and work with Democrats to help more of our people make it in America.”
