WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today:

"Iran continues to oppress its people and threaten Israel and the region.  That is why enforcement of the nuclear deal is so important. The waivers the President issued today prevent the distraction of an unnecessary crisis at the exact moment we are dealing with North Korea and trying to thwart Iran’s regionally destabilizing behavior.  Refusing to waive sanctions relief would have also undermined America’s credibility.
“I am open to a follow-on agreement to enforce and strengthen the deal more thoroughly, but that would need to be done in the context of a broader strategy and in concert with our allies.  It also must not violate the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

“The current status quo of uncertainty is unacceptable – it hurts our credibility and helps the hard-line element within Iran’s government. Instead of furthering uncertainty, the President should use the effective tools Congress gave him to help protect American security and ensure Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon.”
