WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) released the following statement after the Obama Administration announced humanitarian aid for South Sudan:

“Today’s announcement of $180 million in food aid to alleviate the threat of famine in South Sudan reflects America’s continued determination to help the people of the world’s newest sovereign state pursue a future of opportunity and peace.  This famine is a needless and imminent catastrophe, fueled in large part by the political instability in South Sudan.
"It is imperative that the country’s political leaders work together, respecting the democratic process, to combat food insecurity and other humanitarian crises that demand their full attention.  In my visit to Juba seven years ago, I saw a people eager to take the future into their own hands and build a free, secure, and prosperous nation.  I continue to urge President Kiir and former Vice President Machar to set their differences aside in favor of responsible cooperation to meet the challenges the South Sudanese people face and lay the groundwork for the brighter future they deserve.”
