WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today following the adoption of an amendment to the Labor-HHS appropriations bill that allows child welfare and placement organizations to discriminate against prospective parents from adopting or fostering children on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, or religion:

"Once again, Republicans have chosen to use their House Majority to discriminate against LGBT Americans.  This time, their victims also include children in need of safe and loving homes.  The amendment they inserted into the Labor-HHS appropriations bill today during a subcommittee markup would allow child welfare and placement organizations to deny adoption or fostering opportunities to qualified families on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, or religion.  With more than 117,000 children waiting to be adopted and nearly four times that in foster care, Democrats strongly oppose this effort by Republicans to put political messaging to the extreme right ahead of the needs of these children."
