WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the House passed H. Res. 599 last night, a House Resolution highlighting the humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen:

“I’m pleased that the House was able to reach a bipartisan compromise on a resolution highlighting the humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen and making it clear that Congress must and will play its part in defining our military’s role in that country. Members on both sides have been working to bring this matter to the Floor for an open debate about the scope of America’s role in this conflict, in which innocent Yemeni civilians have been killed, and I thank Rep. Ro Khanna and others for stepping up to bring this issue to the forefront.  We must have an open and honest discussion of what role the United States ought to play and how our nation can work with its allies to bring the conflict in Yemen to a peaceful end.”
