WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the House passage of H.R. 3547, the government funding bill for fiscal year 2014:
“While today’s omnibus appropriations bill does not fully reflect Democrats’ budget priorities, it is a step in the right direction and a compromise that will avert another government shutdown, which is why I voted for it. While this bill is an improvement on the partisan budget blueprint that Republicans had passed in the House, which would have gutted important domestic programs, we still have a long way to go before we are adequately investing in our nation, the well-being of our people, and our long-term economic competitiveness.
“Now that we have passed a compromise agreement to keep the government open through September, we must turn our attention to the looming deadline to ensure our nation pays its bills. Democrats and Republicans have a responsibility to work together to avert another manufactured default crisis – and we must act swiftly to do so. It is very disappointing that Republican Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, even before the budget agreement was finalized last month, made it clear that House Republicans would demand concessions in return for not holding our nation’s credit hostage once more. That is not the way to provide certainty to our economy or to encourage the growth of private sector jobs.
“In the same spirit of bipartisanship that led us to the budget agreement and to the passage of this omnibus appropriations bill, we must now come together to raise the debt limit, restore emergency unemployment insurance for more than 1.3 million Americans, and invest in the growth of jobs and opportunities for all of our people.”
