WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on House passage of bipartisan opioid legislation:

“I am pleased that Democrats and Republicans were able to come together today to pass legislation to address our nation’s opioid crisis.  This bill makes small but important improvements in the fight against the overuse and abuse of addictive opioids and other substance use disorders, and it will help address the challenge of illegal opioids coming into our communities.

“However, there is much more to be done.  In particular, we need to do more to increase funding for treatment and expand health coverage to individuals suffering from substance abuse disorders.   We also need to make sure that Congress does not force millions with substance-abuse disorders from being kicked off their health coverage, as Republicans have repeatedly voted to do.  Our opioid challenge demands a bipartisan commitment in Congress as well as a real partnership between the federal government, states, law enforcement health care providers, and patient advocates.”
