WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement tonight on House Intelligence Committee Republicans' decision to end the investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 election:

“I echo the disappointment of Ranking Member Schiff and Intelligence Committee Democrats at the irresponsible and premature conclusion of the Committee’s investigation. The American people deserve to know what Russia did to interfere in the election of their leaders and representatives - and how to prevent it from recurring. To end an investigation into such a significant national security challenge without getting answers represents a huge mistake. I commend Ranking Member Schiff and Committee Democrats for their tireless work to push for a truly bipartisan effort - and then, when that was no longer possible, to do everything possible to bring the truth to light.

“Congress, as a co-equal branch of government, has an important oversight responsibility, and we need to make sure that the Administration is taking every step possible to protect the integrity of our election systems and hold Russia accountable for its malfeasance. The Committee’s work was not duplicative of that of the Special Counsel; it was complementary. I still believe that the Congress should establish a bipartisan, independent commission to answer the questions that the Republican Majority on the House Intelligence Committee are choosing to leave unanswered.”
