"Today we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his life of service. In October, we witnessed the dedication of a new memorial on the National Mall in Washington honoring Dr. King and his work. His statue now looks out across the Tidal Basin in the direction of the memorial to the author who wrote the words into which Dr. King breathed new life: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.'
"What we dedicated in October is a memorial in stone, but it merely serves to complement the memorial we consecrate every year on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day – a memorial in spirit and in action that we continue to construct together as a nation through our commitment to keep fighting for the promise of America to be kept for all of its sons and daughters equally.
"Dr. King’s message called us to dissolve not only the sharp divisions of the past but also the stubborn barriers to achievement in the future. He called us to build new ladders of opportunity, through equal access to jobs, schools, and the ballot box, so more of our people can achieve the American Dream. Let that be our tribute to him this year."
