WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after voting against Republican measures on the floor that would increase our deficit and compromise Americans’ health:

“After 100 days in the House majority, Republicans have yet to consider even one piece of legislation to create jobs. Instead, they took two votes today that would increase our deficit and compromise Americans’ health. Republicans voted to defund the Affordable Care Act, a step that the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office found would swell the deficit by $5.7 billion over the next decade—a truly irresponsible decision, at a time when voters have made clear they want us to address the deficit.

“Current law already forbids federal dollars from funding abortion. But in pursuit of a divisive social agenda, Republicans also voted to defund Planned Parenthood, which would cut off the crucial services it provides to millions of women, including cancer screenings and blood work.

“Neither of these Republican priorities will become law. But it is telling—and disappointing—that Republicans continue to place their divisive social agenda ahead of the needs of the millions of Americans who remain out of work.”
