WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on Republican budget process reform bills, which won't do anything to bring down the deficit:

“Instead of spending time working with Democrats to pass a comprehensive jobs plan, extend middle class tax cuts, or find a solution to our deficit problem, Republicans have wasted time on these two process bills.  Not only do they fail to bring us closer to finding a solution, but they only serve to tamper with the non-partisan judges we rely on at the Congressional Budget Office to provide unbiased budget analysis.

“While I favor making the budget process more efficient, these bills will not do that.  The Baseline Reform Act would ignore the impact of inflation and population growth on the federal budget, making it more difficult to maintain current basic services.  Even worse, the so-called Pro-Growth Budgeting Act is the latest attempt to enshrine in our budget the same discredited supply-side economics that have failed us before.  It would force the Congressional Budget Office to use what Republicans call ‘dynamic scoring,’ which hides the cost of tax cuts on the deficit.  However, Americans understand that when you cut taxes for the wealthiest, it means our deficit will grow.

“Republicans don’t like the referee’s call, so they’re trying to take away the whistle. Instead of wasting the American people’s time on these partisan bills, this Congress should turn its focus back to what matters – putting us on a sound fiscal path and creating jobs for those out of work.”
