WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced steps being taken by the Pentagon to streamline the defense budget and reduce wasteful spending:

“Democrats have been focused throughout this Congress on reducing the deficit and restoring fiscal responsibility.  As I have said before, every part of our budget must be on the table as we pursue that effort, and I look forward to reviewing the plan announced today.  From what I have heard so far, today’s announcement shows how seriously the Defense Department is working to find savings within their budget, while still keeping our nation secure and our troops safe.  By reducing unnecessary overhead costs and applying savings to parts of the Defense budget where money is truly needed, taxpayer money will be saved.  I want to thank Secretary Gates for his commitment to fiscal discipline and looking for ways to operate more efficiently and effectively, while ensuring that our servicemembers continue to have our strongest support.”
