WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the House Appropriations Committee passed the 2009 supplemental appropriations bill by voice vote:
“I commend Chairman Obey for completing work on the President’s supplemental request for 2009 quickly. I will bring the supplemental to the House Floor for a vote next week so that we can send a bill to the President for his signature as soon as possible.
“The supplemental contains critical funds for Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and pandemic flu. President Obama inherited a difficult situation in the Middle East, and this supplemental provides the funding needed to begin winding down operations in Iraq and shifting resources to Afghanistan and Pakistan, where they are desperately needed. The supplemental also requires a report on five performance assessment measures so that we can ensure that taxpayer dollars are being used wisely in Afghanistan and Pakistan. I expect this bill to receive bipartisan support when it comes to the Floor next week.”
