WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on House passage of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act:
“I applaud the House’s passage of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, legislation that is important for the health of millions of Americans. This bill gives the Food and Drug Administration authority over tobacco products, including the authority to approve new products and regulate tobacco marketing, particularly to minors. Fewer Americans addicted to tobacco means longer lives, better health, and lower health care costs.
“This bill has won wide support from numerous public health organizations, and even some tobacco companies themselves. As Nancy Brown, CEO of the American Heart Association said, the legislation passed today puts the tobacco industry under the only agency ‘that has the experience and know-how to regulate it.’ Given its huge impact on public health, tobacco clearly belongs under the FDA umbrella. I urge the Senate to pass this bill, so that Congress can send it to President Obama’s desk.”
