WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on President Obama's executive order on South Sudan:

“Today’s executive order sends a clear message that the United States will not sit idly by as violence and human rights abuses continue in South Sudan.  Visiting Juba in 2007, I saw a people yearning for a chance to chart their own future – a future based on democracy, economic opportunity, and constructive engagement with the international community and other nations in Africa.  The fighting between government and rebel forces over the past few months has dangerously undermined South Sudan’s prospects for success and placed in jeopardy the kind of future so many South Sudanese have hoped for.

“Those who are instigating the violence now risk sanctions, and the United States will continue to support leaders who are truly committed to building a peaceful and stable South Sudan.  I urge the parties involved to adhere to the January 23 ceasefire and work together to pursue a peaceful resolution to this conflict so that the South Sudanese people can reach for the future they deserve.”
