Washington - House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer released the following statement on the House Ethics Committee announcement this evening that they have established investigative subcommittees for Representatives Robert Ney and William Jefferson, would have investigated Congressman Tom DeLay had he not resigned, and begun an inquiry to determine whether other House Members and staff were involved in the Cunningham scandal.

"I believe the actions announced by the Ethics Committee tonight are appropriate and necessary.  I have consistently and repeatedly said for more than two years that it is the Committee's responsibility to investigate substantive allegations raised in the public domain or brought to their attention privately.  It is my hope that the Committee will successfully complete these investigations in a timely manner."
