WASHINGTON – House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today regarding the first public hearing held by the Election Assistance Commission.  Hoyer was the lead House Democratic sponsor of the Help America Vote Act, the landmark election reform bill that established the Commission:

“As an original cosponsor of the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), I am very pleased with the Election Assistance Commission’s public hearing today.  The guidance that the Commission will offer to state and local election officials to improve their election administration procedures will be invaluable in raising the confidence of all voters this November.

“The Commission was established by HAVA, and today’s hearing demonstrates that the law is achieving the goals its authors laid out.  I look forward to the release of the Commission’s recommendations to help ensure that all voting systems used in the November 2004 election are secure, reliable and accurate.”
