WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Democratic discharge petition that would bring Senate-passed middle class tax cuts up for a vote in the House:
“Today, I signed the discharge petition filed by Rep. Tim Walz that would bring to the Floor an extension of tax cuts for 98% of Americans and 97% of small businesses. These middle class tax cuts were extended by the Senate in July, and the House ought to take action immediately to provide certainty to families and small businesses that their taxes won’t go up on January 1.
“Providing tax relief for the middle class is something both parties agree on, and President Obama has said he would sign this bill right away. There is no reason why we cannot pass it now as we continue negotiations to prevent the rest of the fiscal cliff. Middle class tax relief should not be held hostage to tax cuts for the wealthy. Unfortunately, House Republicans have refused to bring this middle class tax cut extension to the Floor, and Democrats will continue to do everything possible to prevent middle class families and small business owners from seeing an unnecessary tax hike next year. I urge all members – Democrats and Republicans – to sign this discharge petition.”
