WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Congressional Black Caucus’s public hearing on chronic unemployment:
“Today, the Congressional Black Caucus held an important public hearing dedicated to chronic unemployment. This economic downturn has seen millions of Americans out of work—but, as the CBC reminds us, the roots of chronic unemployment in so many American communities go far deeper. They include, most glaringly of all, subpar education and the economic insecurity caused by our failing health care system.
“So I’m grateful that the CBC is considering a wide range of policy solutions to persistent inequality and joblessness, including youth summer jobs, vocational education, and job training programs. I believe that policies like those—combined with Congress’s recent efforts to strengthen job-creating infrastructure projects and encourage small businesses to grow and add new workers—will create significant new employment opportunities, both in the short and long term.”
