WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today condemning Sunday's illegitimate referendum in Crimea:

"I condemn in the strongest terms Sunday's illegitimate referendum in Crimea, which was conducted under intimidation and the threat of violence.  The United States and our European allies will not recognize its results.  In May, Ukrainians will have the opportunity to vote in free and open elections supervised by international election monitors to choose a path forward for their country, and the results of that election, not yesterday's vote, must determine the future of Ukraine.

"I support the President and European leaders' imposition of sanctions, including against those individuals in President Putin's inner circle who are encouraging Russia's attempts to undermine Ukraine's democracy and to further President Putin's military and economic ambitions.  In supporting the illegal and illegitimate plebiscite in Crimea, Russia stands alone.  The American people and the international community stand with the people of Ukraine, because all Ukrainians, including all those who reside in Crimea, deserve a fair shot at a peaceful, free, and democratic future."
