WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today regarding the announcement by the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct late last night that it had initiated an “informal fact-finding” into allegations that Representative Nick Smith was offered bribes in return for a yea vote on the controversial Medicare Prescription Drug legislation in November 2003:

“I am pleased that Chairman Hefley announced last night that the Committee is conducting an ‘informal fact-finding.’  This issue was raised by Representative Smith publicly and widely discussed by him and the media.

“If it is true that there is the possibility of criminal and serious violations of the rules and ethics of the House of Representatives I hope that this matter will be fully investigated.”
