WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after House Republicans passed their GOP tax scam bill out of the Ways and Means Committee on a party-line vote and Senate Republicans released a draft of their tax bill to cut taxes on the wealthiest Americans at the expense of the middle class:

“In agreeing to a bill today that so obviously directs trillions in new and expanded tax breaks for the wealthiest at the expense of the middle class, Ways and Means Republicans have made it clear where their priorities lie.  It is the epitome of hypocrisy that these same Republicans, who regularly railed against increasing the debt by a single penny, would eagerly agree to add more than $1.5 trillion to it over the next decade for no other reason than to give tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires.
“Democrats support tax reform that lifts the middle class and promotes economic growth.  That is not what was advanced today.  Thirty-eight million middle-class American households will pay more in taxes if this bill were to become law, according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center.  Last-minute changes made this afternoon by Chairman Brady won’t alter that fact, and – in spite of minor adjustments – the draft released today from Senate Finance Committee Chairman Hatch won’t change it either.
“There is virtually universal agreement that, in order to provide the certainty necessary to successfully grow our economy, real tax reform must be permanent – and in order to be permanent it must be bipartisan.  Republicans should end their obsession with jamming through a partisan tax bill using reconciliation procedures and instead work with Democrats on real tax reform that focuses on raising middle-class wages and expanding job creation.”
