WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the announced retirement of House Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey (WI):
“It is with a sense of real loss that I learned of Chairman David Obey’s decision to retire from the Congress at the end of his present term.
“I have served with Chairman Obey for three decades. In the 44 years I have been in a legislative body, I have seen only a few legislators as talented, as committed, or as effective. Chairman Obey’s passion for principles and policy has made an extraordinary contribution to his state, to his country, and the United States House of Representatives.
“As a Wisconsin legislator in the tradition of Robert La Follette, he continues to stand up as a proud and eloquent defender of progressive values. Health care reform was a cause that drew on all of Chairman Obey’s passions and talents—and its passage this year, with David Obey gaveling down the vote, stands as a crowning accomplishment. His chairmanship of the Appropriations Committee has benefitted the children, the families, and the working people of America. Dave Obey is a Democrat’s Democrat who is always willing to cooperate with his Republican colleagues in the best interests of our country. I am very proud to call Dave my friend and my colleague. I know that he will continue to contribute greatly to meeting the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”
