WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of César Chávez Day:

“I join in marking the 87th anniversary of César Chávez's birth and celebrating his incredible life and legacy.  Through his work to combat discrimination against Latinos and many other Americans, his leadership of the United Farm Workers, and his unwavering commitment to the rights of agricultural workers, César Chávez will always be remembered as one of history’s greatest Americans.  His legacy continues to inspire millions today to reshape our nation and our world so that it better reflects the values of equality, opportunity, and justice.

“Our nation is stronger and better off because of César Chávez and those who marched with him, organized with him, and carry on his work today.  Let us never forget his fortitude and his determination to seek justice. Let us continue to walk in his footsteps by advancing the cause of raising the minimum wage, fixing a broken immigration system that separates families, and restoring the emergency unemployment insurance that supports those struggling to find jobs.  In doing so, let us draw strength from Chávez's enduring words of perseverance: ‘¡Sí, se puede!’ – ‘Yes, we can!’
