WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after the announcement that Democratic Caucus Chairman Bob Menendez was selected to fill the New Jersey Senate seat of Governor-elect Jon Corzine:

“The people of New Jersey have good reason to celebrate today with the announcement that U.S. Representative Bob Menendez will become their newest Senator.

“Bob will bring with him to the Senate the same integrity, principles, and strong leadership that he has demonstrated during his time in the House.  I know that he will continue to be a tenacious and effective leader on the issues that are vital to New Jersey, like jobs, health care and homeland security.

“A lifetime of dedicated service to his state at every level – from the school board to the mayor’s office to the state legislature – has led him to become the highest ranking Hispanic in Congressional history.  Bob’s career is a true inspiration to all Americans.

“It has been an honor to serve with Bob in the House of Representatives, and we will miss him.  However, I know that he will be an important voice in the United States Senate, and I wish him well.”
