WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after a bipartisan group of Senators introduced their comprehensive immigration reform proposal:

“The bill introduced by a bipartisan group of Senators represents a significant first step toward achieving comprehensive immigration reform.  For the 11 million undocumented individuals living in and contributing to our communities, the start of this legislative process could not come sooner.

“The bipartisan measure includes provisions that address a range of issues, including increased border security and speedier processing of people who have applied to come here legally, while showing compassion to those who are already here without proper documentation – including the many ‘DREAMers’ who were brought here as children and for whom America is the only home they have known.

“Comprehensive immigration reform should also enable us to attract and secure a highly skilled workforce by making it easier for foreign graduates in science, technology, engineering, and math – or ‘STEM’ – fields to keep their talents here, which is one of House Democrats’ four key Make It In America priorities this Congress and would help grow our manufacturing sector.  As the legislative process moves forward in both the Senate and the House and more ideas are incorporated, I look forward to achieving a sensible agreement on comprehensive reform this year.”
