WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for August:
"The jobs report for August continues to show the underlying strength of our economy and the progress of our recovery. With 152,000 private sector jobs added last month and the unemployment rate falling to 7.3%, we are seeing an economy with the potential for robust growth. However, with the budget sequester and continued uncertainty resulting from dysfunction in Congress, we have yet to tap fully into that potential.
"House Democrats' Make It In America plan for jobs and competitiveness is exactly the boost our recovery needs, along with the achievement of a big and balanced agreement on deficits that can restore certainty to our markets, businesses, and working families. Our set of Make It In America bills, some of which already have bipartisan cosponsors, would invest in pursuing a national manufacturing strategy, promoting exports, encouraging the return of innovation and jobs, and securing a twenty-first century workforce. I hope that the House will consider Make It In America legislation over the coming weeks - and get serious about seeking bipartisan compromise on a balanced solution to deficits that will help move our economy forward and put more Americans back to work."
