WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released their jobs report for August:
“Today we received the news that our private sector added 67,000 jobs last month—the eighth straight month of private sector growth. That private sector companies feel confident enough to continue adding employees to their payrolls is a sign that Democratic recovery policies are showing results. Nevertheless, total employment declined in August, as a result of the end of temporary government Census jobs. The overall decline in employment, along with the fact that millions of Americans remain out of work, shows that much remains to be done.
“That is why Democrats—in the face of Republican obstruction—passed legislation last month to keep nearly 300,000 teachers, police officers, firefighters, nurses, and private sector workers on the job. And it’s why, when Congress returns to session, we will continue our progress on the Make it in America agenda, a plan to restore the American manufacturing sector and the secure, middle-class jobs it creates. President Obama has already signed three manufacturing-boosting bills into law, and Congress will continue to make the Make it in America agenda a top legislative priority.
“Repairing the damage of the most severe economic crisis since the Great Depression will take much more hard work. But today’s jobs report is evidence that Democratic recovery policies have put our country on the right path.”
