WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today following reports of an attack on the Champs-Élysées in Paris:

"This evening's shooting in Paris will do nothing to dim the lights of liberty, equality, and fraternity that make France a bright light unto the world. The family of the police officer who was killed will be in my thoughts and prayers tonight and in the days to come. In a few days, the French people will have an opportunity to show extremists that they will not be cowed by terror as they wield the world's most powerful weapon against the kind of totalitarianism and autocracy terrorists seek: their votes. The people of France and the United States have stood together on the front lines of defending democracy and rule of law since the days of Washington and Lafayette. We will continue to stand together against those who seek to undermine our republics and the freedoms they make possible."
