WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, which is observed in May:

“This May, America marks Asian Pacific American Heritage Month: a month to honor the history and contributions of some 16 million Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. May was chosen as the month for this observance because it is the anniversary of two important events in the history of this community: the arrival in the of the first Japanese immigrants to America, on May 7, 1843, and the completion of the transcontinental railroad—constructed in large part by Chinese immigrants—on May 10, 1869.

“For more than a century and a half, the AAPI community has made remarkable contributions to the success of our nation. Today, it is one of our fastest-growing communities, and it enriches our nation with leaders in fields from the military to small business to education to the arts to public service. For generations, immigrants have been drawn to America and its promise of opportunity. And now, it’s our job to keep America a land of opportunity. That’s why I’ve worked hard to advance the Make It In America agenda, an agenda to create more well-paying jobs by ensuring that we make more things in America and sell them to the world. As we reflect on our past, let’s remember the importance of investing in our future, so that we can keep alive the opportunities that have made America what it is today.”
