WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement tonight on Congressman Mike Thompson's amendment to the Commerce, Justice, and Science appropriations bill that would improve the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, which passed the House with strong bipartisan support:

“Gun violence is a problem Congress cannot ignore, and I am encouraged that Democrats and Republicans were able to come together today to pass an amendment offered by Rep. Mike Thompson that increases the funding available to states to maintain accurate and up-to-date records used in background checks.  This commonsense amendment will provide resources to improve the National Instant Criminal Background Check System’s effectiveness in preventing violent criminals and the seriously mentally ill from obtaining weapons that can kill and harm innocent people.  I hope Democrats and Republicans can continue to work in a bipartisan way over the coming months to strengthen protections against dangerous guns falling into the wrong hands.”
