WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after he attended the memorial service for the firefighters killed in the Arizona wildfires:

“Today, as I stood with the families of the nineteen fallen firefighters in Prescott Valley, Arizona, I joined in remembering their dedication, their courage, and their sacrifice as they fought to save their community from one of the region’s most devastating wildfires.  Members of an elite crew of firefighters, they put their lives on the line time and again, knowing full well the dangers of the job.  I was moved by the outpouring of support and love from the people of Prescott, Yarnell, and the surrounding communities for the families of the fallen.  When tragedy strikes, it is in our nature as Americans to rally together, to comfort one another, and to lend a helping hand as those touched by hardship and loss begin the process of rebuilding their lives.

“The families who lost their homes and those still recovering from injuries are in the thoughts and prayers today of Americans across the country.  As Co-Chair of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus, I will continue to stand up for our nation’s firefighters by supporting funding for safety equipment and training as well as serving as an advocate for families of the fallen and injured.  We must always ensure that federal, state, and local firefighters have every tool they need to get the job done safely and to prevent fires from starting and spreading.

“We will never forget the heroes of Yarnell.  Let us stand together as one nation as we mourn these nineteen brave Americans and demonstrate our support for their loved ones and neighbors as they begin to rebuild their communities.”
