WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today regarding the expected legislative response to the current economic crisis:
“Congress is looking forward to receiving the Bush Administration’s proposal to deal with the economic crisis.  The House will act quickly on this proposal – I expect to bring it to the Floor early next week.
“Democrats intend to work with the Administration to ensure that this proposal focuses on strengthening the economy and restoring confidence in the markets for the benefit of all Americans.  Our priority will be to protect taxpayers on Main Street, not reward bad decisions made on Wall Street.
“We will also look to enact other measures to help the economy recover and assist those who have been hit hardest by this crisis.
“But the work will not stop there.  Congress will follow through on a comprehensive effort to strengthen regulations so that we don’t have a repeat of this costly debacle.”
