WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) joined Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (CA-12), Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06), Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard Neal (MA-01), Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler (NY-10), and Education and the Workforce Committee Ranking Member Bobby Scott (VA-03) for a press conference on the Trump Administration's latest attempt to sabotage the Affordable Care Act and allow insurance companies to deny coverage to over 133 million Americans with pre-existing conditions. Below are his remarks as prepared for delivery:

“Republicans are continuing their stealth attack on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the benefits that it has provided for millions and millions of Americans.

“The Trump Administration’s efforts to sabotage the ACA do not reflect the will of the American people.  In a recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, more voters said health care is their top issue than any other issue.  Republicans failed to repeal the law in Congress because of popular opposition – now they are trying to do so by other means.

“The ACA can be improved and strengthened, but the Trump Justice Department would gut the law and would allow insurers to: drop 133 million Americans with pre-existing conditions from coverage, including people with asthma, cancer, and diabetes; charge older Americans an age tax; charge women more than men for the same coverage; reinstate annual and lifetime limits; and dramatically increase premiums.

“Once again, Republicans would say to the American people: ‘if you get sick, you’re on your own.’

“Democrats, however, are offering a better deal: we’re fighting to improve the ACA, bring down health care costs for families, and take steps to stabilize our health insurance markets.  We should be building on the health care reforms we enacted, not taking them apart.”
