WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Republicans blocked legislation – for the second consecutive week – that would help the middle class and create jobs:
“I am extremely disappointed Republicans continued to play political games, voting against a job-creating measure that had bipartisan support in committee and previously passed the House with overwhelming bipartisan support.  The bill on the Floor today was changed to add revisions Republicans asked for, and there was no reason for them to oppose it.  Respected scholar Norm Ornstein derided the antics of Republicans who last week played games with this bill through a ‘gotcha’ motion to recommit, noting, ‘the unfortunate fact is that the motion to recommit with instructions has for more than a decade become a hollow vehicle and a farce.’  Today’s action makes it very clear that Republicans are not fighting for the American people, they are fighting for their own political self-interest.  Democrats, however, will not stop fighting to create jobs and help the middle class, and so I will bring the COMPETES Act back to the House Floor under a rule soon.”
