WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board announced that a portion of Recovery Act funds directly created and saved more than 640,000 jobs, resulting in a total of roughly 1 million jobs created and saved so far:
“Today's announcement shows the Recovery Act is working as intended to create jobs and bring an end to the severe recession. The reports cover only a small slice of Recovery funds, but it matches the estimates by Moody’s, the Congressional Budget Office, and the Council of Economic Advisors that the Recovery Act has saved or created 1 million jobs. And today’s reports do not take into account the other ways that the Recovery Act assisted families hurt by the recession, through the largest middle-class tax cut in history and other benefits to ensure Americans can provide for their families and return our economy to growth.
“While we are encouraged by today’s reports, Democrats remain focused on doing everything we can to keep creating jobs. Even as the Recovery Act has helped stop the economic downslide and as we see signs that the economy is starting to turn around, it is more important than ever to continue adding jobs and getting Americans back to work, so we ensure a strong and solid economic recovery for all families.”
