WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Bush spoke at Camp David on the economy:

"President Bush seems generally unwilling or incapable of recognizing the deep anxiety millions of Americans feel about current economic conditions.  The ‘middle-class squeeze’ is real and the President’s failure to acknowledge it – let alone offer proposals to address it – only harms his credibility in the eyes of the American people.

“The President virtually ignores the fact that real household incomes are down $1,700 since he took office, that 6 million more Americans are without health insurance today, and that our economy has lost more than 2 million manufacturing jobs.  Meanwhile, health care costs and college expenses continue to skyrocket, and gas prices have doubled.  No wonder the American people are very receptive to our Democratic plan to lead America in a new direction.

“Democrats are very aware of the increasing economic pressure on American families, and we are absolutely committed to policies that will move our economy forward and help all Americans prosper.  We will take our country in a new direction by enacting a long-overdue increase in the federal minimum wage, repealing laws that encourage corporations to move jobs overseas, making health care and college more affordable, moving our nation toward energy independence, and restoring fiscal discipline.

“The fact is, the Bush economic program consists of only one policy – tax cuts that largely benefit the wealthiest Americans.  The President is reaping what he has sown – voters who feel left behind by Republican economic policies and are looking for a change.”
