WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement this morning on President Trump's tweets denying the official death toll in Puerto Rico following Hurricanes Irma and Maria:

“President Trump’s tweets this morning denying the official death toll from Hurricanes Irma and Maria are beyond comprehension and deeply offensive to the thousands of American families who lost loved ones.  They are also a sad reminder of Congressional Republicans’ irresponsible failure to investigate the Trump Administration’s botched response to the storms and why our fellow Americans living in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands were left without power, clean water, health care, and other basic services for months afterward.  Only Donald Trump would try to make the deaths of nearly 3,000 Americans into a story about himself and his political fortunes.  Shame on him, and shame on this Congress for not holding him and his Administration accountable for their role in these tragic and preventable deaths.”
