WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after a press conference with Democratic leaders Representative Nancy Pelosi (CA), Senator Harry Reid (NV), Senator Debbie Stabenow (MI), Senator Dick Durbin (IL), Representative Charlie Rangel (NY), Senator Max Baucus (MT), and Representative Robert Menendez (NJ):

“By stubbornly continuing his 60-day campaign for private accounts, President Bush is delaying a bipartisan solution to Social Security’s solvency problem.

“Democrats agree: we must secure Social Security’s future. The way to do that, as some honest Republicans have admitted, is by addressing solvency, not by privatizing Social Security.

“This conversation must begin where there is bipartisan agreement – Social Security’s solvency must be addressed.

“Furthermore this issue is inextricably linked to the historic fiscal U-turn caused by the Republican Party’s irresponsible fiscal policies.
“Republican policies have created record deficits that have gobbled up the Social Security surplus.  Republican deficits have weakened our ability to tackle Social Security’s problems. Republican budgets spend every dime of the Social Security trust fund in an effort to mask the depth of their fiscal irresponsibility.

“Democrats believe that we must sit down together as a nation and secure Social Security’s future.  And an important part of that is getting our fiscal house back in order.

"We must take responsibility for our own bills and not stick the next generation with the tab. That would not only be wrong, it would be irresponsible and immoral.”
